EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
