Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key developments preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with further updates expected as events unfold.
