Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
